About Maxxis
Origin and Expansion
Cheng Shin Rubber Industry Co. or most commonly known as Maxxis is a Taiwanese multinational tyre manufacturing brand based in Yuanlin, Taiwan. Founded in the year 1967, Maxxis is the ninth largest tyre manufacturer in the world, clocking US$ 4 billion in revenue in 2019.
The company started as a manufacturer for bicycle tyres but later expanded into other segments, including motorcycles, scooters, passengers cars, light-truck/SUV, racing, extreme-off-road, and trailers. Presently, Maxxis sells its products in over 180 countries worldwide, including Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Australia.
In India, the company started operating in 2014 as Maxxis Rubber India Private Limited, with an investment of USD 400 million. Maxxis established its first manufacturing plant in the Sanand city of Ahmedabad district, Gujarat. Today, the facility produces two-wheeler tyres and will be expanded in future to produce more products in the Indian market.
Just after a year of its establishment in 2015, the company was picked up as the OEM tyre supplier by Honda for its no.1 selling scooter Activa. And since then, it has been working closely with Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Tata and Jeep in the Indian market for supplying tyres.
The Indian market has a key role to play in achieving the brand’s global vision to be listed among the top five tyre manufacturers in the world by 2026. The company aims to target a market share of at least 15 per cent in the growing two-wheeler segment by 2023.
Besides providing tyres in the domestic market, the products manufactured in the Sanand plant will be exported to the other South Asian markets and then further expansion to the Middle East and African regions in the coming years. Maxxis is also mulling to set up four more manufacturing plants in India, catering to the 4-wheelers tyre market.
Maxxis has a strong presence in motorsports competitions. The company has been sponsoring various competitions and events, including bicycle, motorcycle, and automotive sponsorships. The firm has sponsored Australian Open multiple times, which is considered the largest sports event in the southern hemisphere, and helped the company gain extensive global exposure.
Maxxis has also sponsored Steve Peat Syndicate (SPS), one of the top mountain bike teams and Marin Stans Racing Team, during 2016 and 2017. It has sponsored popular football clubs including Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool FC.
The company is not behind in the field of technology and innovation. It has partnered with German electric vehicle manufacturer e.GO to develop tyres for their future models named Life. For this, the tyremaker reengineered its Victra Sport 5 tyre for performance, strength and durability.
The company has created a concept tyre T Razr that features electromagnetic technology that will help the tyre adapt its aspect ratio based on acceleration, braking and cornering actions of the vehicle. The fans located on the rim will open up to cool down the brake discs while adjusting the air resistance of the wheel.
Facilities
Maxxis engineers at its research and development centres across Asia, Europe and North America are constantly working to produce world-class products using the latest technologies. The company has the largest tyre test track in China built at an investment of US$ 150 million. Through this proving ground, the company gathers feedback from various sponsored riders who continuously report on the tyre performance in some of the demanding conditions.
These rigorous testing operations also help the tyremaker promote its relationship with the major automakers in the world. Maxxis has currently five advanced research facilities located in the Netherlands, China, Taiwan and the US, and looks forward, to further expand their manufacturing presence.
