    About Michelin Car Tyres

    Origin and Expansion

    Michelin is a French Multinational tyre manufacturer based in lermont-Ferrand region of France. The company was founded by Édouard Michelin and André Michelin. It started operating on 28th May, 1889 and two years later, it procured its first patent for the detachable pneumatic tyre. Michelin now owns the BFGoodrich, Kleber, Tigar, Riken, Kormoran and Uniroyal (in North America) tyre brands.

    Michelin holds about 69 manufacturing units in 18 countries across the globe and has customer base in nearly 170+ countries. Michelin manufactures tyres for nearly every kind of automobile, however, in India, compared to other segments, the demand is more for passenger car and SUV tyres.

    Michelin started its India operations a decade ago and is constantly expanding its distribution network. Michelin owns a 290 acre manufacturing unit in Chennai, which was established in the year 2009.

    Achievements

    • In February, at the Tyre Technology Expo 2020 in Hanover, Michelin was awarded the prestigious title of Tyre Manufacturer of the Year for the second year in a row.
    • Michelin was also awarded the Tyre Technology 2020 Innovation Award for its ‘airless’ passenger tyre. This new tyre, Uptis, showcases the expertise of Michelin with new high-tech materials and is the first step in its key Vision concept of “airless”.
    • Michelin earned top customer satisfaction scores in three of four segments of the 2019 J.D. Power Original Equipment Tire Satisfaction Study. With these honors, Michelin has won 91 total J.D. Power awards since the study began in 1989, more than any other tire manufacturer.

    Michelin’s range of products in India caters to the rising demands of the Passenger Cars, Truck & Bus and Two Wheeler & OTR (Off the Road) vehicles.

    In 2009, Michelin Group and Tamil Nadu government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Michelin’s tyre manufacturing plant. This 290 acres facility is currently focussed on manufacturing a range of Radial Truck/Bus tyres. Michelin India’s operation is assisted by Michelin India Technology Center(MITC), an integral part of the company’s global R&D network that has over 6,000 employees engaged in research, development and process engineering. Complemented by a Materials Test Laboratory at Manesar, Haryana, MITC is focused on radial truck and bus tyre R&D to support Michelin manufacturing facilities in Chennai, China and Thailand.
