An iconic vehicle like Mahindra Thar deserves special tyres
The homegrown automaker is gearing up to unveil its next-gen Mahindra Thar at the upcoming New Delhi Auto Expo 2020. As evident from the spied images floating on the internet, the rugged vehicle is likely to draw cues from the revered Jeep Wrangler. The second-generation Thar is likely to feature removable panels such as front roof panels and front doors (as power switches now move to central console). Similar to the Wrangler, it may get the washable interiors. The upcoming generation of Thar appears to have grown in proportions too compared to the existing version.
The Mahindra SUV is expected to carry the same 4×4 drivetrain system and mechanical locking differential. Coming to the tyres, Mahindra is likely to go with the same set of tyres as offer in the current Thar. The Mahindra Thar CRDe is offered with only a single tyre option – P 235/70 R 16 tubeless tyres. The DI variant which used to come with smaller tyre size has been discontinued owing to forthcoming stringent emission and safety norms applicable from 1 April 2020.
Unlike other SUVs, the tyre plays a significant role in enhancing the macho appeal of the Mahindra Thar. The pronounced wheel arches with the all-terrain tyres tucked in a scream for the breath-taking performance of this potent machine. Let’s have a look at some of the best tyres for the Thar.
Yokohama Geolander A/T – S
Price: Rs 7050 (approximately)
The Japanese tyre giant developed a new tread pattern for the Geolander A/T – S which not only appears aggressive but scores high on traction in off-road conditions including wet and snowy. The Yokohama Geolander A/T – S comes with four straight grooves for easy evacuation of water and excellent grip on wet surfaces. The optimised lug groove, 3D shaped sipes and overhauled aggressive shoulder design all contribute to the exceptional performance of the Yokohama on most surfaces. This makes it ideal for a go-anywhere vehicle like the Mahindra Thar.
Bridgestone Dueler H/T D689
Price: Rs 8810 (approximately)
The Mahindra Thar comes factory fitted with the Bridgestone Dueler H/T tyres. Ideally, the optimum performance that Mahindra lists in the brochure include these tyres too. If you want your Thar to behave the same way the company says, the Dueler H/T tyres are the way to go ahead. If you are someone who uses Thar for regular city or highway commuting and occasional off-roads, this is the tyre you should go for. It gives the best of both worlds – outright performance on highways and impeccable performance on off-roads.
Michelin LTX Force
Price: Rs 8955 (approximately)
This is probably the best Thar tyre if budget isn’t a constraint. The Michelin LTX Force offers excellent grip on the road and impressive traction on off-roads. The tyre has been specifically designed to enhance durability and commanding grip and control over the road. Michelin LTX Force boasts of being 35 per cent more durable than its prime competitors as certified by DEKRA Institute. You get comfortable ride quality, improved traction, excellent wet grip and low noise with the Michelin.
Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA
Price: Rs 10260 (approximately)
Armed with the Silent Armor Technology, the Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA needs no introduction. The 4×4 tyre offers impressive off-road performance and is equally dominant on the regular tarmac as well. The unique tread pattern offers excellent wet grip along with off-road traction. The straight grooves ensure there is no margin for aquaplaning and water drains swiftly. Adding toughness to the Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA are the two high tensile steel belts which help tyre munch more miles.
