BMW launched the X1 SUV aiming to expand its luxury compact crossover fanbase in India, and so far, it has been quite successful in creating new standards in this segment. Launched in 2010, the X1 is currently the best-selling compact SUV from BMW in the Indian market.
The second-generation model was launched with a complete overhaul in 2016, while the latest version introduced in 2020 takes forward the traits of its predecessor with subtle tweaks inside and out. The X1 comes with a striking personality, versatility and flexibility in addition to innovative technologies making it an ultimate beast in the entry-level luxury SUVs.
On the outside, the new BMW X1 sports a more prominent signature kidney grille, revised headlamps with LED daytime running lights, aggressive front bumpers and black underbody cladding with faux silver skid plates. The side profile gets a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels, while the rear now comes with restyled sporty taillights and revamped bumpers.
Inside, the cabin gets new upholstery and improved quality of materials, however, the overall design remains the same. In terms of comfort and convenience, you do get an updated 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with a lot more appeal and an updated i-Drive interface. But in terms of smartphone synchronization, you only get Apple CarPlay and no Android Auto.
Further, the BMW X1 2020 gets an elegant instrument panel with a 5.7inch colour display, a new panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, electrically adjustable seat for both driver and the co-passenger, with the driver’s side also getting memory function. Other comfort aspects include 2-zone climate control, rain sensors with automatic headlights, Hi-Fi speaker system, and 40:20:40 split-folding functionality, among others.
In the safety department, the BMW X1 is loaded with six airbags, ABS with EBD, dynamic stability control (DSC), cornering brake control (CBC), attentive assistance, dynamic traction control (DTC), electric parking brake with auto hold, and park distance control with rear camera.
The SUV is powered by a 2.0L, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, carried forward from the outgoing model in the BS6 guise. The petrol motor produces 192PS and 280Nm of torque, while the diesel unit is tweaked to generate 190PS and 400Nm of max torque.
An 8-speed torque converter automatic comes as standard. The four different driving modes, including ECO, PRO, Comfort and Sport make navigation easy and comfortable according to the given road surfaces.

The BMW X1 challenges the likes of Audi Q3, Mercedes Benz GLA Class and Volvo XC40 in the segment. BMW X1 is available in two trims Sport X and xLine, with nine elegant colour options, including seven metallics Mineral White, Black Sapphire, Sparkling Brown, Sunset Orange, Mediterranean Blue, Misano Blue and Storm Bay, and two non-metallic body paints viz. Alpine White and Black.
