Pirelli Diablo Superbike "tyre of (our) dreams": German auto magazine PS
Published On 17-Jun-2016
A German automotive magazine has rated the Pirelli Diablo Superbike motorcycle tyre the best motorcycle tyre. The magazine named PS put racing slicks from six different tyre makers to test on the Sachsenring racing circuit in Germany. All the tyres - Pirelli Diablo Superbike, Bridgestone Battlax Racing V02, Michelin Power Slick Ultimate, Dunlop KR 106/KR 108, Metzeler Racetec RR Slick and Continental Track - were fitted to a BMW S1000 RR motorcycle in sizes 120/70 R17 front and 200/65 R17 rear.
The bike was piloted by Christian Kellner, a former FIM Supersport World Championship rider. Each tyre was rated on the basis of these parameters - handling, steering precision, stability, grip, on-limit behaviour, braking stability, feedback and best lap time.
Pirelli's Diablo Superbike toppeed the charts on grip, on-limit behaviour and the fastest lap (1:32.46) parameters. As far as the fastest lap time is concerned, Kellner's posted time when using Diablo Superbike tyres was over two-tenths of a second ahead of times posted using Bridgestone Battlax Racing V02 and Michelin Power Slick Ultimate tyres. The gap stretched to more than half a second ahead when compared with times posted using Continental Track, Dunlop KR 106/KR 108 and Metzeler Racetec RR Slick tyres. In the end, PS called the Diablo Superbike the "tyre of (its) dreams" as a result of its combination of speed and feedback clarity.
The full test results will be published in the July 2016 issue of PS.
