In a latest industry development, homegrown tyre manufacturer TVS Srichakra (also known as TVS Tyres) has announced entering into an agreement with French tyre maker Michelin in India. According to TVS Tyres, the partnership between the two tyre giants will see the duo manufacture bias motorcycle and scooter tyres designed by Michelin at TVS’ Madurai facility.
As per the agreement, TVS Srichakra has given Michelin a contract under which it will manufacture two-wheeler bias tyres at the aforementioned facility as well as some tyres from TVS’ product range of two-wheeler tyres. The two wheeler tyres will be produced under the Michelin brand name and will be sold in the Indian market.
In a statement prepared by TVS Tyres, the company said, “In order to meet the growing demand for its two-wheeler (motorcycle and scooter) tyres in India, Michelin has entered into an agreement with TVS Srichakra for setting up a new manufacturing facility within its existing plant at Madurai. The products designed by Michelin for the Indian market will be manufactured by TVS Srichakra at this new facility under the Michelin brand name.”
The Madurai unit of TVS Tyres has an annual production capacity of 3.6 million tyres. According to TVS, "best practices from both companies will be incorporated to deliver world-class products to Indian consumers".
Although Michelin has a manufacturing facility of its own in Tamil Nadu, it is to be noted that Michelin uses it only to produce bus and truck radial tyres in India. In a related news, TVS Tyres had earlier confirmed that it is developing tyres for the forthcoming TVS-BMW motorcycle.
