The importance of the tyre industry cannot be ignored, as it remains an integral part of the automotive sector, contributing to about 3 per cent of the total manufacturing GDP of India, and 0.5 per cent of the overall GDP. Further, the tyre industry has doubled in the last decade from INR 30,000 crore in 2010-11 to more than INR 65,000 crore in 2020-21.
Hence, looking at the blooming industry and the craze toward feature and performance-packed two-wheelers and four-wheelers, it is worthy to mention the top 10 popular tyre brands that account for more than 90 per cent of the total tyres sales in the country.
Established in 1946, Madras Rubber Factory, most commonly known as MRF or MRF Tyres is a Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India based multinational tyre manufacturer. The brand produces tyres for a variety of segments, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars, trucks, buses, LCV, tractors, off–the–road (OTR) tyres, and also for aeroplanes.
MRF is the largest tyre manufacturer in India and accounts for about 25 per cent of the total tyre sales in the country. The company has a strong presence in over 65 countries and has ten different manufacturing units situated in Goa, Medak (Telangana), Ankenpally (Telangana), Arkonam Tamil Nadu), Tiruvottiyur (Tamil Nadu), Trichy, Kottayam, Puducherry, Dahej (Gujarat), and Tiruchirapalli (Tamil Nadu). Formed in 1972 in Haryana, the Apollo Tyres has become one of the leading tyre brands in the country, with a market share of about 18 per cent. Apart from being the second most popular brand in India, Apollo Tyres is also the 15th largest tyre maker in the world by production volume. The company has a solid presence in over 100 countries with seven manufacturing facilities, five in India and two in Europe, along with two global research and development centres.
The company also owns Netherland-based tyre manufacturer, Vredestein, known for producing premium and performance tyres for four-wheelers. Apollo tyres offer products for categories, including bikes and scooters, four-wheelers, trucks and buses, agricultural, industrial and earthmovers. The company generates about 69 per cent of its total revenue from India, 26 per cent from Europe and the remaining 5 per cent from other countries.

The homegrown company currently holds a market share of about 11 per cent and serves almost every automotive segment, including bikes, scooters, passenger cars, SUVs, trucks, buses and tractors.
Over the years, the brand has grown manifold in India and worldwide as it has a presence in over 130 countries. The tyre maker has six manufacturing units across the country with a combined production capacity of 15 million tyres per annum. CEAT is a common brand among automotive OEMs.

Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Company
Established in 1898, Goodyear is one of the oldest and most well-known tyre brands with global dominance. The company is currently the 4th largest producer of tyres in the world and one of the leading tyre makers in India. It was formed in 1961 in India with the name Goodyear India Ltd and now commands a market share of about 3 per cent.
The company, at present, produce and supplies tyres for a variety of segments, including passenger, performance vehicles and SUV 4X4. Bridgestone is the largest tyre manufacturer in the world. The company, presently headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, came into existence in 1931, while the Indian wing was founded in 1996. The company produces and sells tyres for two-wheelers, passenger and off-road vehicles.
