Tips to maintain tyres

Tyres are one of the most important things to be taken care of while driving. These are the fundamental connection between a vehicle and the road and hence, should be maintained properly. Good quality tyres will provide you with a pleasant and comfortable ride while worn out or bad quality tyres can make you witness a very bad driving experience.

Moreover, properly maintained tyres make your car easy to handle and at the same time improve the fuel mileage. They also improve the steering responsiveness, acceleration and braking quality. However, while driving, we come across various situations and conditions, not to ignore our inappropriate driving habits, that have adverse affect on the tyres.

So, we have come up with a few tips that would help you take care your tyres while driving:

1) Maintain correct tyre pressure:

Maintain correct tyre pressure

Every tyre has its specific air-pressure. Always maintain the pressure recommended by your manufacturer. It is important that you maintain an optimal pressure in all the tyres of your car so that it could help in enhancing your safety, fuel economy, handling and braking quality of your car, etc.

2) Check the tyre pressure regularly:

Always check the pressure in the tyre when it is cold. Probably you should check it before starting for a ride or 3-4 hours after you come back from a drive. This is suggested because tyres expand when they are hot and hence, resulting in wrong pressure reading. You should check the air pressure in your tyres at least once a week as in summers tyres lose pressure rapidly.

3) Nitrogen is a Myth:

Nitrogen is a myth as road car tyres do not need nitrogen. One should fill air in dry weather because moisture makes the air heavy and hence, tyres too become heavy which can further affect the handling and steering quality of the car.

4) Follow the tyre rotation specified by manufacture:

One should always follow the tyre rotation specified by the manufacture. This helps in even wear and tear of your tyre and thus, expanding its lifespan. It is quite crucial for the tyres to be rotated as the front tyres apply more pressure than the rear ones. Each of the wheels on your car has uneven wear characteristics that makes rotation a necessary process.

5) Do not turn tyres when the car is stationary:

Always remember that you should not turn your steering wheel when the car is not moving. This can cause uneven and unnecessary wearing to your tyres and thus, reducing your tyres durability. It will also impact your steering system.

6) Get some pressure out when you need extra grip:

While driving we need to cross through various kinds of road surfaces. Some might be muddy, some  sandy while still others could be snowy or  water logged. In all these cases, our tyres go through a testing situation where they need to provide better grip to the vehicle. It is recommended reduce some of the pressure from your tyres as it will help them get the required grip on the road surface and will also prevent them from premature wearing.

7) Do not overfill tyres:

While filling air in the tyres, you need to be really careful about the quantity of air you are pushing in. Remember that the tyres should not be overfilled as they expand while driving and this may lead to unpleasant situations like tyre blast.

8) Never brake or accelerate too hard:

While driving, keep in mind that you should never brake or accelerate very hard because too hard braking or acceleration can put direct pressure to the tyres and hence, they loose the rubber quality faster than normal.

9) Always check the tyre tread:

You should check the tread of your tyres on a regular basis. A quite simple method to do that is; take a one rupee coin and place it between the tread. If more than 2/3 of the coin is visible, it is the time to replace them with a new set of tyres.

10) Avoid curbs and shocks on road:

While driving, you should stay away from  curbs. If your vehicle has hit any of the hard stones or bumps on the road surface, take it to a professional mechanic and get it checked for safety. In these cases, your tyres may go through serious structural damage.
