Nokian Tyre Maker Asks 1,630 Staff To Go Home Temporarily

The outbreak of the coronavirus has been affecting businesses including tyre manufacturers worldwide. The Finish tyre maker Nokian becomes the latest to be impacted by the pandemic. It has decided to implement temporary layoffs of 1630 employees at its Finland facility.

Nokian has been in talks with the staff for the possible layoff of employees for 90 days. Although the layoff would be temporary, negotiations for the same have already started.

In its statement, the company said, “The background for these activities is the decrease in demand in the European car and tyre market.”

Earlier, the tyre maker had released an advisory within the company for its employees to stay away from the face to face meetings and had suspended business travel. Moreover, it has resorted to remote work module wherever possible at its operations across the globe.

In the same episode, the Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo and the Latin Auto Parts Expo has also been postponed. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the organisers of the Expo to reschedule the event from July 14-17 to November 17-20.
