Pirelli to be British GT Championship's official tyre supplier

Pirelli has inked a multi-year deal with British GT Championship to officially supply race tyres from 2016 onwards. This deal follows the announcement of Pirelli's supply contract for Blancpain GT Series. Blancpain GT Series is the premier GT Championship for the race versions of the production supercars. More than 10 manufacturers take part in this series and compete at the variety of iconic circuits in Europe.

The British GT Series also follows a very similar format and 30 race teams compete for the championship. This series features an obligatory pit stop for driver change in between the race. Next year onwards, the cars will run on the Pirelli P Zero Competition tyres that are similar to the tyres developed for Blancpain GT Series. According to Pirelli, these bespoke race tyres share lot of characteristics with the regular road-going P Zero tyres that are used on most production supercars on sale today. The tyre development during the championship directly benefits the road-going tyre due to direct technology transfer.

Paul Hembery, Pirelli’s motorsport director said, "Supplying the British GT Championship is very important for Pirelli as it represents perfectly our target market: premium and prestige manufacturers. The tyres that we supply for these cars on the road are made to measure for each model, using many of the same design processes and production techniques as are utilised in motorsport. As a result, there is a direct technology transfer between GT racing and the road. This is why Pirelli has been chosen as original equipment by the vast majority of supercar manufacturers with around 85 per cent of our homologation now being for premium and prestige vehicles."
