After a long wait, Toyota has recently launched the new model of Hilux pickup truck in the Indian market. The price for the 2022 Toyota Hilux ranges between Rs 33.99 lakh and Rs 36.80 lakh (ex-showroom). The pick-up truck is locally assembled and underpins the same IMV platform as Fortuner and Innova.
Talking about the exteriors, the new Hilux comes in a double-cab body styling and appears unique and purposeful right from the beginning. The vehicle shares some basic elements from sibling Fortuner, but comes with a unique fascia sporting a large trapezoidal grille with chrome surround, angular LED headlights and LED foglamps. The revised bumpers look sharp, while the muscular skid plates lend the needed aggression.
The lengthy side profile looks apparent, featuring rugged black plastic covering over the wheel arches and the 18-inch alloy machined/chrome alloy wheels identical to the Fortuner. The rear is conventional with a high dose of chrome and LED combi tail lamps. The Hilux is 5,325mm lengthy, 1,855mm wide, 1,815mm tall and comes with a wheelbase of 3,085mm. It is slightly longer than the arch-rival Isuzu D-max V-Cross in India.
Inside, the Hilux shares several elements from the Fortuner except for the dashboard layout. The things such as 8-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, instrument cluster, climate controls, front seats and steering wheel are all identical to the Fortuner.
The dashboard is all-black with contrasting brusher silver and glossy black trims. As far as equipment is concerned, the vehicle comes with almost all-modern-day amenities, including auto headlamps, dual-zone climate control, all power windows, cooled upper glovebox, rear ac vents, 60:40 second-row seat split, leather seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat, and steering mounted audio and phone & voice controls.
Being a pickup vehicle, the safety, especially for off-roading, has to be top-notch. The Hilux comes with an electrochromic inside rear-view mirror, seven airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Assist Control, Downhill Assist Control, Tyre Angle Monitor, Automated Limited Slip Differential and Active Traction Control.
Powering the Hilux is the 2.8L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine shared with Fortuner, producing 204PS and 420Nm in the manual variant and 204PS and 500Nm in the automatic version.
The transmission duties are handled by 6-speed MT with iMT technology or the 6-speed automatic sequential shift gearbox. The Hilux is only available in a 4X4 configuration and comes with a water wading capacity of 700mm. For enhanced off-roading, the automaker has given front and rear electronic differential locks, and a low-range gearbox.
The Hilux is available in three variants and five elegant colour options, including Emotional Red, White Pearl CS, Gray Metallic, Super White and Silver Metallic.
