Maruti Suzuki has never been a vital player beyond the budget passenger car segments, and this is not a bad thing at all. In fact, it has been its strong forte for decades. However, with the growing popularity of mid-sized SUVs and the lack of a solid player in its portfolio to counter Creta, Seltos and other such cars, Maruti Suzuki decided to partner with Toyota to introduce its globally famed Grand Vitara SUV in India.
The new Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is built on the same platform as Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, but there are a lot of differences that start right from the front styling. The face of Vitara features a big, chrome-lined split-designed hexagonal grille, three-element DRLs at the top and projector headlamps placed on the bumper beneath.
The side profile is clean with a chrome lining along the front and rear window line, while the 17-inch precision cut alloy wheels are dapper. The rear profile looks identical with the same tailgate, bumper, and skid plates, except for the sleek and squarish LED taillamps.
Interiors are also shared with Hyryder, with the main differentiator being the cabin colour scheme. The Vitara comes with a plethora of features, including 9-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a premium sound system, a digital driver display, connected car tech, wireless phone charging, quilted leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.
The safety is also up to the mark with aspects such as six airbags, ABS with EBD, TPMS, electronic stability programme, Hill hold and hill descent control, and reverse parking sensors with a 360-degree camera.
The Maruti Grand Vitara is powered by a 1.5L petrol motor available either, with a 103PS mild-hybrid unit or a 116PS self-charging strong-hybrid system. Where the former is mated to a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission with an optional AllGrip AWD system exclusively available with the manual gearbox, the latter uses an eCVT automatic gearbox.
